Overview

Background

The Yale Student Investment Group (YSIG) is the oldest independent undergraduate fund in the country. Founded in 1982, YSIG manages a portfolio of approximately $500,000 in public equities. Over the years, we’ve consistently grown and diversified our portfolio to generate stable returns. YSIG follows a fundamental value strategy and takes long or short positions across a variety of industries.


Investment Teams

Investment teams form the core of YSIG’s activities. Each of the investment teams are led by an experienced group head who leads discussions about financial strategy, provides technical training, and facilitates weekly stock pitches to other team members.

Investment Teams
Macro

The Macro Group employs a top-down approach to identify investment opportunities from macroeconomic trends in monetary policy, international trade, geopolitical developments, and more. The group is sector agnostic and seeks to understand how systemic factors influence markets.

Industrials

The Industrials Group focused on companies that manufacture and distribute capital goods in support of industries such as aerospace and defense, construction and engineering, and electrical equipment and heavy machinery.

Small Cap

The Small Cap & Special Situations Group invests in companies with a market cap of less than $2 billion. They also find mispriced assets in situations frequently misunderstood by the general market, including mergers and acquisitions and bankruptcies.

Technology

The TMT Group finds investment opportunities in a variety of technology, media, and telecom sub-sectors including software, eCommerce, live streaming, mobile communications, semiconductors, fintech, among many others. The group focuses on exploring emerging technologies that will have a profound impact on society, such as 5G, quantum computing, and AI.

Healthcare

The Healthcare Group looks at a wide range of businesses involved in the provision of healthcare including biotech, pharmaceuticals, and health insurance companies. The Group seeks to apply technical expertise in biology, chemistry, and physics to best identify innovative drugs and healthcare solutions with the potential for outsized returns.

Consumers

The Consumers & Energy Group covers a wide range of consumer facing sectors including apparel/accessories, food/beverage, transportation/entertainment, and department/discount stores. They also explore the energy sector to find companies in sub-sectors including renewable energy, energy provision, energy infrastructure, and semiconductors.
